myths about writing

a journal with writing, scribbles, and revisions

today, i want to introduce you all to a series i will be conducting titled:

myths about writing

in this series, i will take on things said/assumed/characterized about the writing world that are completely false. overtime, we may tackle myths in the creative world as a whole, but for now i’ll stick to what i know best.

in this edition, i’ll be addressing myth #1:

“the best artists always make great art

FALSE. INCORRECTO. BIG CAP. ERROUNOUS. *SOUND OF FAMILY FEUD BUZZER*

this assumption that “good artist are always good” is a resounding lie that audiences have assumed for generations. and unfortunately, i frequently see a lot of beginning writers pysch themselves out of the game because they believe this.

i hate to be that guy but i’m gonna tell you a secret…

ready?

*whispers*

most of your favorite artist have art that they, themselves. believe is terrible. you’ll just never see it because it’s in a vault, journal, paper-filled trash can or recently deleted folder somewhere.

artist want only the work they feel most confident in to be released in the public eye and would not always show every single thing they’ve ever created to the world.

that’s what makes the artform beautiful. that’s what makes them good artists. that they can make bad art too and get past it. that they strategically choose what they allow you to digest from them.

so, i say to you writers, artists, and creatives out there:

create. create because that’s what you love to do. keep creating so you continue to get better at what you love to do. and share it with the world when you are ready. because the best artists never came from making the best work every day. they came from experience, risk taking, vulnerability, and sharing what they love to do. not being paralyzed by the fear of comparison.

and don’t worry, i’m no hypocrite. in the name of this, i shared a picture above of some rough drafts just to show there’s always more work to a final draft than the reader may know.

asé, asé.
