this past week, i curated, conducted, and executed my first-ever open mic at Howard University titled “BLU’s Open Mic”.
BLU’s Open Mic is a unique experience founded on the focus of
- uplifting unknown artists
- showcasing a variety of creatives in new lights
- allowing the audience to be a part of the show through engaging activities
these open mic experiences are always specially curated based on the partnership (in this case it was RUF, a Christian organization on Howard’s campus) and there is a suggested theme to make the night cohesive. of course, we allow all artist to discuss whatever is on their mind but the spotlight artists are usually chosen with an idea in mind.
even though we do our events in partnership, these partnerships do not affect the set ethos for BLU’s Open Mic. for example, there will always be a heavier emphasis on allowing poets the space to perform to an audience looking to LISTEN. there will also be a preference for artists who can fit seamlessly into intimate, homey vibes. these events are from the lens of Poet and Spoken Word Artist, so i proudly sit in the bias i have for how i feel they should be executed.
in all, the event was an absolute success. held in front of Ira Aldrige Theater on a beautiful wednesday evening — the attendance was superb, the artists were amazing, and the night was one to remember. i look forward to seeing more artists and admirers at the next one to be announced very soon.
the goal is to make yourself at home at BLU’s Open Mic, just like we do here in blusroom.
asé, asé.
