“MIC CHECK, MIC CHECK! ONE, TWO, MIC CHECK! LET’S GO!”
some would say that’s my job in a nutshell. some would say that’s just me getting warmed up. i would say that’s the start of a guaranteed good time with BLU.
if you’re wondering what the heck i’m talking about — i’m talking about my time as a Host for Howard University’s 2022 Yardfest concert. this experience was full of smiles, laughs, adjustments, the infamous Howard run-arounds, and a great moment for me as i continue to add to my hosting resume.
before i dive into my experience as a Host, i should tell you how i was considered for this opportunity in the first place.
since the fall semester of 2021, i have been hosting events on Howard University’s campus. my first ever event was the UGSA block party, where i auditioned to be a Host for the organization. since that time, i worked tirelessly to host a variety of things in the area from First Fridays, Royal Court Pageants, Corporate Events (like • the Untrapped Lil Baby – On The Yard Event), Valley/Yard/House Parties and many more!
all these moments led to the opportunity to rock out the stage in front of thousands of people. i took this opportunity as yet another learning experience while maximizing the amount of fun i could have. i got to bring out some of my favorite Howard artists like June and TaylerLee, and interact with a lively, energetic crowd.
most people would question the opportunity because i was sharing the stage with my beautiful co-host, Armani Washington, or that later on Jae Murphy, (DJ/Host/Howard Alum), would come to host the mainstage during prime time. however, that mindset only sabotages the experience of a moment i could have easily NOT been called for. moments like these are the building blocks that lead to the next thing, the next connection, and keep you aligned with the journey you need to be on.
after rocking out from the beginning of Yardfest to about 4PM, i was given the liberty to experience show business in real time. i watched artists like Beanie Sigel, Flo Milli, Glorilla, Jacquees, Gogo Marrow, Raina Rich, Symba, and others arrive. i also had the opportunity to speak personally with Cam Newton, Fivio’s PR Manager, witness Chloe x Halle on stage, and see President Wayne Frederick. the interesting part was observing how their individual teams function and how serious they were in having the show they envisioned. from the looks, the set list, to who was on stage during their performance. in the midst of chaos, everything was still intentionally curated.
though many people were disappointed with not seeing some of the rumored artists or other things, i found my joy in the moment. i found my joy in soaking in the sun on a homecoming weekend at the best HBCU and college on the planet. i appreciated the opportunity to touch that stage and share my voice on the microphone. and i wouldn’t have it any other way.
not to mention, the tailgate the following was AMAZING. but more on that later ;).
peace, peace!
